Almost two decades after the iconic teen comedy John Tucker Must Die premiered, the original cast has confirmed that a sequel is officially in development.
The exciting news was shared when original stars Jesse Metcalfe, Arielle Kebbel, and Sophia Bush reunited for a panel at Epic Cons Chicago on March 24, 2024. Speaking to the enthusiastic crowd, Metcalfe—who played the titular high school heartthrob—revealed that a new script has been circulating around Hollywood. “I’ve heard rumors of this script — there’s a script. Apparently, it’s amazing,” Metcalfe shared. He added that he “can’t wait to read it” and would “definitely love to be a part of it”.
Arielle Kebbel, who played Carrie in the original 2006 film, chimed in to confirm the rumors. She revealed that she has stepped into a producing role in recent years and is heavily involved with the sequel. “The rumour is true,” Kebbel told the audience, proudly adding that the script “does involve all of the OG cast”. The original film famously starred Metcalfe, Kebbel, Bush, Brittany Snow, Ashanti, and Penn Badgley.
During the panel, Metcalfe also joked about his character’s memorable scenes, asking, “Do I get a chance to wear a thong again?”. Kebbel teased that he should make his own brand, to which Metcalfe quipped, “I’m here for it. I can’t wait to unleash this dad bod on the big screen”.
In a later interview in April, Metcalfe provided a promising update, confirming that he had actually read the script by that point. He gave major kudos to Kebbel for “developing it and pushing this along”. While he couldn’t guarantee that all his former co-stars like Ashanti and Brittany Snow had officially signed on yet, he noted that “they’re in the script” and he thinks “everybody’s up for it”.
As for the plot, fans can expect a modern twist on the classic revenge story. Metcalfe explained that the sequel will touch on similar themes from the original film but will be explored “through the lens of the current landscape”.
While there is no confirmed release date or production timeline yet, fans of the Y2K rom-com can rest assured that John Tucker is getting ready for another round.
